Today In Black History: Black Football
On this date in 1892, the first black intercollegiate football game was played in the Salisbury, North Carolina between Livingstone College and Biddle College, which eventually changed its name to Johnson C. Smith University. The young women of the school's industrial department made the players' uniforms for the first game. The teams played two 45-minute halves on Livingstone's front lawn with Livingstone winning 5-0. The Commemorative Classic now celebrates this game yearly. You can find out more about this historic game and the Classic here.

Post From A Post: Theo Martins In Africa
I haven't done this in a while, but I felt my homie Theo's trip was a great opportunity to do so. From time to time I like to post about a post one of my friends did on their site. Theo Martins aka The Rhode Island Hero just got back from an incredible trip to Zambia, South Central Africa. We chopped it up a little bit over BBM about just how amazing it was. He actually put together a great recap of his entire trip over at his Site/Blog. So when you guys get a chance hit his post up and enjoy his African Trip.

Today In Black History: Battle of Okeechobee

On this date in 1837 Seminole Indian forces defeated American troops at The Battle of Okeechobee. The natives were lead by John Horse who a Black Chief by all accounts of the battle. Horse shared command with Alligator Sam Jones and Wild Cat. Because the government could not tell if these darker natives were “Indians” or run away slaves, In 1849, the U.S. attorney general's office ruled that Black Seminoles were slaves by law. The U.S. government actively promoted slavery among relocated Native American tribes.
Even tribes who had never practiced slavery before were encouraged to do so. It was in the same year that John Horse founded the city of Wewoka in Mexico. It served as a refuge for runaway slaves.
