DCtoBC x The Great Progression - "Don't Wuwwy: Kendrick Lamar Live in DC!"

My brothers DC toBC and The Gee Pee (are you with me) have Top Dawg Entertainment recording artist KENDRICK LAMAR in DC at the 9:30 Club, making it his first-ever public show in the nation’s capital. The Compton standout is expected to sell out the 1200 capacity venue thanks to his loyal following in the DC metropolitan area. Kendrick will be joined on stage by fellow label mate SCHOOLBOY Q as he cycles through his hits spanning from his early career to his most recent project, the critically acclaimed #Section80. Also sharing the spotlight for the evening are buzzing DMV natives PHIL ADE and PHIL DA PHUTURE, both signees of Grammy nominated crooner Raheem DeVaughn’s 368 Music Group, as well as Houston’s own ASHTON TRAVIS, a lyrical mastermind recently crowned winner of the Hip-Hop Unplugged Series, hosted by Def Jam’s Lenny Santiago and MTV’s Sway. You never know who else may pop up, either. There are still a few tickets yet to this show. When I say a few, I mean like if you refresh your page they may be gone. So make sure you get one while you can.

Below is a compilation of music titled "Hello World" to introduce you to all five of the artists performing tomorrow done by DC to BC. Click on the cover to download the mix.

New Music: Swizz Beatz vs. Fela Kuti Pt. 1

I know I'm a day late with this new music from Swizz Beats's #MonsterMonday, but it was sitting in my inbox and I just couldn't get to it yesterday. For those who missed it, this week Swizzy used Nigerian musician Fela Kuti for a 9-track mash-up of their music for his weekly release. This is just the first installation of this series which should produce some interesting songs.

Michael Jackson In Hip Hop

I saw this video compilation of MJ samples in hip hop over at Defsound. The video includes most of the MJ samples excluding vocal samples. Of course they didn't fit all of his samples in this video, so a part two is in the process of getting made. Also check out the reference map of MJ samples in music. There are a couple missing songs but it was a great idea none the less.

Happy Birthday Mr. Superfly

On this date in 1942 Curtis Mayfield was born in Chicago, Illinois. Mayfield is highly regarded as a pioneer of funk and of politically conscious black music. Many of his recordings with the Impressions became anthems of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. He was a multi-instrumentalist who played the guitar, bass, piano, saxophone, and drums. His most famous album, Super Fly, is regarded as one of all-time great albums regardless of genre.

YEBies You Should Know....

The Fayetteville, North Carolina native J. Cole is a rapper you need to add to you iPod asap. I started listen to him because a friend of mines who went to NC A&T gave me his cd. It had some of his stuff on it but I didn't get to hear much of the cd because it was super scratched. So I did what everybody does now; I googled him and then checked him out on Myspace. Dude grew on me fast to say the least. Then I saw his "Dollar And A Dream2" at 2db and it was a wrap. That instantly became my anthem in so many ways. Like any good fan I started passing that track out to anybody who would listen. Each time I would get the same responses back, "Who did that dollar and a dream track?" or "That mix was tough, but that dollar and a dream joint goes so hard". At that point I knew it wasn't just me that felt the realness of that song.

Cole has already done a mixtape with DJ On Point titled "The Come Up" and is currently working on new material.

Happy Birthday 50th Birthday Motown...

Founded by Berry Gordy as Tamla Records on January 12, 1959, the company was incorporated as Motown Record Corporation in 1960. The name derived from the words motor and town, is also a nickname for Detroit. Motown is easily the most important and influential black label of all time. It was the first record label owned by an African American to primarily feature African-American artists. They not only did a lot for music in America, they also help the racial integration of that time. They had that great "Motown Sound" that was undeniably good which made their music able to crossover to all races all over the word.

A Sound Fit For A King....

DJ Toomp is the man behind the sound of the self proclaimed "King Of The South " T.I. His unique style of using snares and drum kicks sets him apart from many other southern producers in the industry today. When you hear his beats drop, you automatically know its a Toomp track.
Here's a little footage of DJ Toomp at work and a playlist of most of his production.

Revenge Of The N.E.R.D...

My first memories of Pharrell was in high school when he did the tracks for Nore. Then came "I Just Want To Love You" by Jay-Z and I was hooked to his sound. Pharrell has made it cool to be a nerd, stake board, listen to other genres besides rap or R&B, wear bright color clothes and shoes, all the while making some of the greatest and most classic music of our time. He was worked with artist from Jay-Z to Justin Timberlake, creating a perfect mesh between his unique sound and style with the artists own talents. My homie Modi at DCtoBC loves this guy like I love Jay-Z, Magic Johnson, and cornbread. If you know me, then you know thats a whole lot of loving. So I thought it would be only right if I let him finish off this post.

Modi
ha. thank you sir. i do love skateboard p. he can do no wrong in my book. plus, he has some sort of magical fountain of youth, because he doesn't age. i heard he's still 23, but that's just word on the street. skateboard is a trendsetter like dan said. i mean, when was skateboarding cool for black people? not until pharrell co-signed it as acceptable and encouraged. and let's not forget his work with N*E*R*D, either. he goes hard and gets millions of bucks for beats for madonna, britney, jay-z, TI, etc., but he is on his indie stuff too. a black rock star whose official, unlike the shop boyz. it's about the music to him, the dollars are really nothing in the long run. when he retires, it'll probably be the saddest day in music.
