August 4th- WEAR OBAMA GEAR!!!!!

This email and post is for all of us America who were so political this time two years ago when President Obama was running for office, but allowed themselves to fall back into the trap of letting other people speak for them politically.

Reader submitted email:

"Since his historic election, President Obama has been inundated with a barrage of venomous criticism. From the first cries calling for the failure of his administration by Vitter and Limbaugh to the media critique of his handling of the BP oil spill, his critics are unequivocal in telling us that he can do no right.

In the face of contrary evidence, “Birthers” rant that the President is not a US citizen and should be removed from office. Once closed by Senator Barry Goldwater, the “father” of modern conservatism, the Republican leadership has opened the doors of their party to the John Birch Society and other reactionary extremists. With cries of wanting to “take back OUR country” and “we want OUR America back,” the Tea Partiers clearly tell us that there is no room for his (The President’s) kind in their America– at least not in a position of leadership or Presidential Authority. Who remembers someone ever disrespectfully calling out “You Lie!” to either of the Bushes, Reagan, Ford or Nixon in the chambers of the US House of Representatives or someone openly carrying a loaded weapon to one of their political events?

For years our borders have been as porous as cheesecloth, but suddenly critics tell us the Administration is failing to live up to its responsibility to quell the flow of immigrants from our southern border. Without questioning the impact of our non-existent northern border on illegal immigration, reactionary responses from municipal to state governments tell us that if “Obama won’t do anything, we’ll stop these Mexicans from coming here.”

Living up to expectations, the actions of Fox News have denigrated from constant criticism of President Obama to their appeal, by the likes of Beck, to the basest elements in society to “revolt” against theoppressor Obama or to “spill the blood of tyrants to water the tree of Liberty .” Disappointingly, most mainstream media just turned its attention and focus to President Obama’s critics, while excluding a balanced assessment of the political landscape.

That having been said, there are millions out here who support the reasoned and measured approach of the President. We understand from the evidence he presents daily that he has an extraordinary, almost encyclopedic understanding of issues impacting this nation and the world. We see him lauded by his peers around the world as a “thinker” or as a no-nonsense leader who understands, and can articulate, the positions of friends and adversaries alike. While not addressing or achieving goals the way the media “puppeteers” would choose, HE GETS THE JOB DONE!!!

An overwhelming number of Americans elected President Obama and millions still support him, but too many of us do so silently. If the progressive agenda we elected the President to achieve is to be successful, we must help the President achieve it. We cannot allow the media to report from negative positions without challenge. Just as others demonstrate their hatred and disrespect of President Obama, we must actively demonstrate our support.

We call on ALL who support President Obama to take action. On August 4th, the President’s birthday, we ask those who support him to wear any campaign item from the Presidential election as a demonstration of our ongoing support. Bring out your old campaign paraphernalia.

If you don’t have caps, buttons or tee shirts, wear a red, white, and blue tri-color ribbon or clothing on August 4th. If nothing else, this simple demonstration of support for our President will provide a counteraction to the negativity that spews forth daily. We can do this. YES WE CAN. YES WE WILL.

In the unlikely story that is America , there's never been anything false about hope.

Daydreaming (WAKE UP)...

I dream of the day when black fathers will be free
to pursue the American dream and take care of their responsibilities!
I dream of the day when black mothers will believe
that their children deserve a fighting chance at life’s greatest possibilities!

I dream of the day when grade school education will be universally equal,
and even the kids of Barak Obama would go to D.C. Public Schools;
of the day when we truly believe that this City’s children are our future
and adequately enrich them with the necessary tools.

I dream of the day when men will truly be judged
by the content of their character, and not the color of their skin;
I dream of the day when a woman will choose her mate, based on more than just his “genes” or the depths of the pockets within.

I dream of a day when I find true love,
deeper than most people have ever known;
a timeless connection with a soul-mate that God made just for me
to have and to hold and forever call my own.

I dream of the day when justice will prevail,
Truth will unveil, and Love will concur all;
when crime will end, there will be no need for lawyers to defend,
and all will be peaceful and well!

I dream of the day when my city will truly be clean, of trash and debris,
drugs, homelessness, and disease; of dirty politics and even dirtier inequity.

I dream of the day when I can do what I love the most,
get these school loans off my back, and still earn a livable wage;
the day when I can maintain a rooftop loft overlooking the Nation’s Capital,
in exchange for writing meaningful words on a page.

I dream of the day when all these dreams
will become my reality,
Of a day when all my people will find the courage
to live FREE: boldly and transparently!

I dream of the day when I will become the change that I claim I want to see,
But the only way that day will come, is if I STOP DREAMING, WAKE UP, & BE!

"A Different World" Episode of The Week: "A World Alike"

Being that today is the 20 year anniversary of Nelson Mandela's release from prison, I thought this would be a great episode of A Different World to put up. Freddie discovered that the company funding the scholarship is a subsidiary of a corporation with investments in South Africa. Julian proposed a boycott which angered Whitley by recommending that Hillman cut all financial ties with the corporation, as this would cost Kim her scholarship. A young man from South Africa argues against the termination of scholarships, because he feels that the success of African American students serves as a beacon of hope to black South Africans mired in poverty and oppression.

YEBies Presents: Weekly Tax Tips For The Win (WTTFTW) Week 4

Alright, we took a week off (I had client demands) but we are back hitting you upside the head with that extensive tax knowledge. This edition of WTTFTW is geared towards people that either own their own business or those employed as independent contractors.

Tax Tips #1 & 2 : Understanding Bonus Depreciation
This year the tax law includes 2 sections (179 and 168(k)) on bonus depreciation. As you may or may not know, most business expenses for items that will be in use over one year must has to be depreciated. However, in order to encourage business owners to make the government created two separate sections that will allow you claim your expenses faster.

Section 179 Deduction allows you to deduct the first $250,000 of equipment purchased within the tax year. Most small businesses and independent contractors do not have more than 250K worth of expenditures in a tax year, so Section 179 would allow you to deduct all of your expenses on your tax return. However, for those with more than there is an additional deduction you can take.

Section 168(k) Bonus Depreciation - This bonus depreciation allows you to deduct 50% of the purchase price of the asset in the year it was purchased. When applying these 2 sections you would first take the 179 deduction and then the 168(k) bonus depreciation. For example, If you spent 600K on equipment on 2009, you would be able to expense 250K under 179 immediately. After that the remaining 350K(600-250) would be reduced by 50% under section 168(k). The remaining 175K would be depreciated over the life of the equipment.

Tax Tip #3 : Home Office Expenses
If you operate a home office, you may qualify to deduct a portion of your home expenses (which are normally not deductible for tax purposes). The rules for qualifying for a home office deduction can be found at this site. If you qualify, the amount of the expenses you can take is a percentage, calculated in two ways. 1) Taking the Sq. Ft of your office and dividing it by the Sq Ft. of your house or 2) dividing 1(the office) by the amount of rooms in your house. So, if you had utility bills of 4,000 for the year and your office is 20% of your home, you would be able to take a $800 on your tax return.

That's it for this edition of WTTFTW, by now everyone should have their W-2's and 1099's and should be thinking about their tax returns. Leave questions in the comment section or e-mail yebies@gmail.com and I will try to answer all questions.

Peace,

You Resident Taxpert

Mama He Made It...

The only song I could think about was Jay-Z's "I Made It" while he walked on the stage to give that incredible speech last night. Knowing that his grandmother passed away the day before, I know he was thinking about her and how hard she worked with his mother to get him to this very point.
