YEBies Book Of The Month: Forty Million Dollar Slaves

Morgan State Alumni and sports columnist for The New York Times, William Rhoden took a in depth look at the current state of the black athlete and how this current position came to be in his best seller Forty Million Dollar Slaves. What if, in 1945, Jackie Robinson hadn't signed a contract to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers and had stayed instead with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League? In this book Rhoden concludes that the black community and most black athletes would have been better off. Rhoden himself was a defensive back at Morgan during the heyday of black college athletics. He was on the roster for Morgan States's historic game at Yankee Stadium against Grambling which was and still is considered the biggest black college football game ever. The book chronicles how the rise of salaries and visibility ultimately resulted in the silence of the black athlete voices on anything other then what they can do on the playing field or sell us.

A Different World...

Being the YEB that I am, most of my DVDs and Tapes are of my favorite black movies and TV shows. Name it and I got it either retail or bootleg. Since I can remember, I have always been a gigantic fan of A Different World. Even though I hated the 1st season, I bought the DVD set in anticipation of getting Seasons 2-6. Where the hell is season 2??????? I have gone as far as YouTube and searching every torrent you can think of to get this set.

Season One Intro(which was the wackest one)

Viacom, who bought Ventura after it bought Urbanworks, will not release Season 2 or any after. Their excuse was that the poor sales of the Season One DVD set was evidence that the show doesn't have a fan base. What the hell are they talking about???? Who are they questioning???? Have they seen season one, that was the worst of all the seasons. Umm, A Different World was a Top 5 show for five of the six years it was on the air from 1987-1993. Many HBCU's even credit this show along with Spike Lee's "School Daze" with increasing enrollments at HBCU's by 25% during the 90's. I know I wanted to go to a HBCU because of the show.

Everyone knows that it wasn’t until the seasons went on that the show got better and picked up. It actually began to have the flavor of an HBCU campus. Debbie Allen was not only drawing from her experiences at Howard University, she had the writing staff take an annual trip to Spelman College and talked to students, faculty and administrators about the issues they dealt with.

The claim that there aren't enough A Different World fans to justify releasing seasons 2-6 of the show on DVD is some BS. It's funny how Seinfeld and Roseanne, Top 10 shows that were on during the same time span as A Different World have been fully released on DVD, but a quality black show that tackled some interesting topics back in the day such as teen pregnancy, date rape, homelessness, divesting from South Africa, Black history, interracial dating, HIV/AIDS, the Gulf War, and life after College isn't?

YEBies Cinema...

The importance of School Daze can't be stated enough. It gave the world a glimpse of what Black College life was and some would say still is. The issues that the movie touched on were as relevant then as they are now in today's society. This movie about homecoming weekend at a HBCU was able to capture the importance of a black college experience while still questioning its purpose and relevance in this day and time. From the problems in South Africa to shade issues here in the black community, Spike Lee used each issue to reach a different nerve. I just hope there are still the Dap's out there on these campuses trying to lift the political awareness of their fellow classmates and faculty. YEBies WAKE UP!!!!!!!

Happy Birthday...

Happy Birthday to Morgan State University's Head Mens Basketball Coach Todd Bozeman. In 1993 at the age of 29 Bozeman became the youngest coach ever to take a team to the sweet sixteens. Since then he has turned around Morgan State's program to one of the top in the MEAC including winning the conference title last year and a trip to the NITs. Happy Birthday coach and good luck with the rest of the season.

New Year, Same Goal...

The NCAA Men's Basketball season is officially underway and Coach Bozeman and the Bears want nothing more then to build on last year's success and take the program to even higher heights. This year a regular season title is the minimum goal of the team after setting a new standard for the program last season. Anything less from this team will be a let down this year, especially because they have the talent and staff to get it done. The first home game of the season will be tonight at 7 against UMBC.

Good Luck this year Coach Boze, the staff, and team...
