Memorial Day Weekend 2010 Recap By: Jabari

I had the great pleasure to meet Jabari again this past weekend after first formally meeting him at The Talented event weeks ago. We happened to be at a couple of the same spots and got a chance to see some great thing manifest right here in DC. I dont think a 1 min video can really some up the type of weekend I had but Jabari's is the closest I can get until I get blessed with some footage from the homie Nasser. I don't like to brag or boast but I have some great friends and associates that are and will be doing big things for years to come. This weekend showed me that there are YEBIES all over DC that are trying to leave their mark out here just like me. This short video from Jabari exemplifies exactly what I mean by that statement. There are way too many folks to shout out in the video but I'll toss out a couple of Twitter names and yall can follow some of these eclectic folks; @alice_wonder, @Philade301, @DCtoBC, @Imjustmarcel, @jeffspicoli202, @jamalamode, @ladyswoosh, @NasVegas @kingfuckncarter .... This list could on for a while but follow these folks and let them know @Y_E_B and @Yebies told you so.

Oh yeah be on the lookout for IAMJABARI.com , Thegeepee.com, and last but not least YEBies.com which are all coming soon...

WRTN...."The Kid" aka "The Natural" aka "Junior"

As I woke up today, the TV was on watching me like most mornings and of course ESPN's Sports Center was on. Like every day of the past month, steroids was one of the lead stories. As more and more names are coming out about alleged use and positive tested players, it makes what Ken Griffey Jr did over most his great career even more remarkable. The numbers that he was able to put up in a era where field players and pitchers were using roids to get a added advantage seem to standout so much more now. The roids cut back recovery time as well as adding pure muscle without much effort. Now some people say that roids don't help hand and eye coordination which is true, but when the player does make enough contact where do you think that ball is going to land? Ding, ding, ding, you guessed correct. The ball is smashed out of the park. Baseball saw the rise in ticket sales and interest and didn't care about pointing out the dopers from the purest like Griffey.

In 1987 Griffrey was selected with the first overall pick of that year's amateur draft by the Seattle Mariners straight out of high school. He was up in the big leagues full time by the spring of 1989 and there was no looking back. Junior would go on to establish himself as arguably the best all around player of the 1990's. In his eleven seasons with Seattle Griffey accumulated 1,752 hits, 398 home runs, 1,152 RBIs, and 167 stolen bases. He led the American League in home runs four seasons (1994, 1997, 1998, and 1999), was voted the A.L. MVP in 1997. As good as he was on offense, it was his play in center field that put him head and shoulders above his peers. With his impressive range, Griffey frequently made spectacular diving plays, and he often dazzled fans by making over-the-shoulder basket catches and by robbing opposing hitters of home runs at the wall—leaping up and pulling them back into the field of play. His remarkable play in the field got him 10 gold gloves over his career. Griffey had everything you could look for in a baseball player. His swing was poetry in motion, never looking rushed. He made playing baseball look effortless.

Junior is the son of former player Ken Griffery Sr, so he was raised in the clubhouse so he was able to handle the media from a early age. Because of his great play, boyish looks, and youthfulness, Griffery had many endorsement deals but none were bigger than the one he had with Nike. His signature shoe line is still one of the highest selling ever.

After the 1999 season Griffey asked for and was granted a trade the Cincinnati Reds in a desire to live closer to his relatives in his hometown of Cincinnati. He was never the same on the Reds. Like so many great players before him, Griffey was plagued by a string of injuries, including season-ending injuries in 2002, 2003, and 2004. He showed signs of the old Griffey we all grew to love when he could stay healthy and even made the National League all-star teams in 2004 and 2007.

This off season as a free agent he decided to return to his baseball roots and signed with the Mariners. I'm happy to see he is still able to play because he is the definition of a baseball player. He never caused any problems off the field and came to the park everyday to give his fans a show. That's all us fans ever ask for, and Griffey always gave us that plus more. If the injuries had never occurred it would be Griffey not Bonds who would be the all-time home run leader. One thing that we do know for certain is that when Griffey hangs up his cleats, he will be a first ballot Hall of Famers. As we are finding out more and more each day many of his peers will never be able to say that and even fewer will be able to say they put up their numbers off pure talent, the right way.

Update:  Ken Griffey Jr retired on June 2nd 2010 after 22 seasons with 630 home runs which is 5th all time and a numerous amount of awards and accolades.

To Know Where You're Going, You Must Know Where You Came From....

Over this past weekend I had a chance to partake in some pretty ill stuff with some pretty incredible people and the one thing that was common throughout my weekend was the influence of Hip Hop in everything that went down.

The rap music was the soundtrack to my weekend as the styles, clothes, and venues left lasting images for a lifetime. So I decided that it was only right that this Wednesday I would pay homage to all the original parts of what we now know as HIP HOP by putting up Wild Style.

B-Boying/Breaking, MCing, Graffiti/ Tagging, DJing, and Knowledge, Culture and Understanding

Knowledge will always be King....

P.S. Shout out to Quinn / TheGeePee for turning his crib into a mixture of THIS pool scene and THIS one. Hello Summer.....

It's Coming.....

If you know anything about YEBies or me (the guy behind it) then you know the soundtrack to this whole YEBies movement has been Jay Electronica. This post right here is suppose to be like my Exhibit C with the title being Just Blaze right before Jay goes in.  No movement is truly successful unless the groundwork is done properly. YEBies.com is on its way. Like the great Muhammad Ali once said "Greatness comes from knowing that your train is always on time". I can't give you a date nor time when the entire site will be ready for you guys but know that it's right around the corner. Thanks for your continued support as YEBies continues to build and progress. Now go tell your family, friends, and loved ones to go join the Facebook Fan Page even though you guys aren't really fans but more like family.  Also stay updated with the movement by following YEBies on Twitter if you already haven't. If you want to get at me directly you can hit me at @Y_E_B.

Phil Ade – Hollywood (Remix) (feat. Raekwon, Wale, Tabi Bonney & Raheem DeVaughn)

I know I said I was slowing down with post, especially music ones until the new site was done but I had bless the masses with what we are getting here on a regular in the DMV. The original to this track was my favorite off of Phil Ade's "Starting on JV" mixtape. The video was so DC and made me a even bigger fan when i saw it. I have had the privilege to see him perform it live on numerous occasions and it still never gets old. If you don't have Starting on JV get that while you are here and also be on the look out for his next project "The Letterman" with Don Cannon set to drop sometime in June. Big ups to Modi on the picture from Hustlepalooza.

ESPN 30 For 30: No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson [Video]

For those that missed it or didn't know about it, last night ESPN aired their 30 For 30 documentary series chronicling NBA star’s Allen Iverson’s trial from a 1993 incident that racially divided his hometown of Hampton, Virgina.

On February 13, 1993, 17-year-old Bethel High School basketball star Allen Iverson entered a Hampton, Virginia bowling alley with several classmates. It was supposed to be an ordinary evening, but it became a night that defined Iverson's young life: a quarrel soon erupted into a brawl pitting Iverson's young, black friends against a group of older white men. The fallout from the fight and the handling of the subsequent trial landed the nation's best high school athlete in jail and sharply divided the city along racial lines. Oscar nominee Steve James (Hoop Dreams) returns to his hometown of Hampton, where he once played basketball, to take a personal look at this still disputed incident and examine its impact on Iverson and the shared community.

"A Different World" Episode of The Week: Mammy Dearest

This episode touched on the history of  "mammies" (black nursemaids in the past, particularly during times of slavery) and how they were viewed in modern culture. The "mammies" were suppose to be a part of the art exhibit for their dorm dedication. The image however was not welcomed by all in the show. Whitley, Freddie and Mr. Gaines insisted that it is important to remember the role of these women in history. Kim tearfully confided in Mr. Gaines about a traumatic incident from her childhood that involved "mammies". Another issue that was covered during this show was that fact that blacks who were rich enough also owned slaves during colonial times. Whitley recommended that Lena should learn more about her heritage by reading slave journals and other information at the Gilbert Library. Lena's research uncovered the fact that Whitley's family owned slaves. The show ends with a great performance that shows the evolution of the African American woman.
