Today In Black History...

31 years ago today Steve Biko a anti-apartheid activist was killed while in captivity in South Africa. It was said at the time that he died because of a hunger strike, but it later came out that he died because of blows to the head and body without any medical treatment. Biko is often forgotten when martyrs are mentioned in America, but in South Africa he is Dr. King, Malcolm X, and who ever else you want to name all wrapped in one. He fought for against the apartheid system that was setup in his country where a nation of majority blacks was rules by a small minority of whites. The whites created laws that made Jim Crow laws in the south seem like jokes. Not to take anything away from any of our civil rights leaders in America, but blacks in America have always and will be a minority, where as in South Africa the whites make up a small minority who ironically rule a country of a majority black. Even tho he died at the young age of 30, nine years younger then King Or X, he did equally as much work for the blacks in South Africa as they did for blacks here in America. For blacks like Biko and Nelson Mandela if you fought the system you were jailed or even worst killed. Even whites who didn't agree with the laws of the land had to watch what they said because the government would also arrest them for treason acts against the country.

Years after Biko's death when Nelson Mandela became president of a non-apartheid South Africa, he said in his inauguration speech that he always knew that this day would come and that it would never have came to a reality without his great friend and brother Steve Biko.

God Bless Africa (Nkosi Sikeleli Africa)... A song made famous by Biko. A tribute Concert for his life in South Africa

Many people have made tributes to Biko from movies to songs. The movie Cry Freedom was written about the last days of Biko's life. Biko was played by a young Denzel Washington in this movie.

Where Were You @?

On the Real G Imma Keep it 100.....

I was in AP English class watching TV when the first plane hit the first building in New York. WE all thought it was a commercial for a new movie coming out. When we realized that the Today show was still on, everyone in the class looked at our teacher and she looked like she had just seen a ghost. We would go on to leave school early that day and return home to watch the rest of the days events. Before I made it home, I even stopped by my friends Eleanor and David's house to chill out and hoop. I met up with my girlfriend at the time JHO and actually went to the mall and bought The Blueprint. Listening to that CD and playing basketball was what I did for the rest of the day until I got word that my dad and relatives were alright in DC and New York. I still think about 9/11 when I hear that great album. At the time I had no idea on how these events would have on the country, world, and my life to come.

I am one of those conspiracy theorist at heart. I used to get a lot of flack for my thoughts because many people felt I was unpatriotic. This is the same country that had slavery for so many years to build it up, the same country that put crack in our black communities to fund a war in South America, sold guns and ammo to drug dealers and felons to lower the number of minorities , and you think they wouldn't pull up two building for another hidden agenda??????

Still to this day no one has explained with a real explanation why the third building dropped. It was not hit by a plane or any major parts of the two towers. Buildings next to them didn't fall but this one did. Why was insurance taken out on these buildings days before this event happend??? How was a bill like the patriot act written and passed so quick? Have you seen how many pages that thing is, its just does not add up. We all of a sudden turned from finding Bin Laden to getting Saddam Hussein in the matter of days. So many things about 9/11 just don't add up.

People use this election to bring change. Bring a change in this system that for years has used its own citizens as ponds in its global chess game. The time is now, don't let this opportunity pass you.....

Love That Girl - Raphael Saadiq

Throwback tuesday...

Most of you that know me know that I have a love for old school rap. Rap from the golden years, before the deaths of tupac, biggie, and Big L. So I was thinking about what I could post today to start of the beginning of "Throwback Tuesdays". As I laid in bed and looked through my iPhone i saw this picture that I took down in Georgetown at one of my favorite spots last weekend. It was a big banner from Yo MTV raps. The light clicked in my head and it dawned on me that a lot of people my age don't remember it, let alone know what it was. For 7 years "YO" was the show that started the spread of rap/hip-hop into the homes of people all over the world. From Fab 5 Freddy to Ed Lover and Dre, the host of this show were as big as the MC's they often interviewed. This show was a gateway to stardom in the industry. For some like Snoop and Nas this show solidified them as stars in the game for that point on in their careers, and for others like Rakim and Kane it paid homage to those who laid down the ground work and had become legends in our culture. The freestyle sessions on here were classic and the outfits seen on here would be the ones to set trends for days to follow. Do you remember Karl Kani, Carhartt Jackets, Timberland Boots, and dudes around the hood wearing hockey jerseys like they even knew any player besides Wayne Gretzky or maybe Mario Lemieux.

Part 1 Of The Last Freestyle Session

Part 2 Of The Last Freestyle Session

If you get a chance look at some of the other videos people have posted. You can see early Snoop camera shy with Dr. Dre or Wu-Tang first coming on the scene with Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

Good Morning....

Yeah I'm back at it again....

Kanye is back at it with another video off the Graduation... When will this dude stop or at least slow down?????

So for the first two nights i have heard some really great speeches at the democratic convention. Michelle Obama did her part Monday and Hillary Clinton followed up today with a tough speech that was much needed and appreciated by many Obama supporters throughout the country. Besides Ted Kennedy's emotional and powerful speech, the ladies of the party have stolen the show thus far in the convention. Honestly tho, I'm just happy that the party is finally coming together and that the little riffs between the Obama and Clinton campaigns are over. We don't need any little thing to happen that might cause old man McCain to win this election in November.

He's a poem that came to me as I watched the convention and hear the analyst analyze

As this land makes history
who will make sure that her story will be told right
Because what we see in sight
should turn on a light, that reminds us of our past
we now have a different cast
but I still see the same outcome in the forecast...

more to come...

Its been a long time, shouldn't have left you without a dope post to comment to.....

ON THE REAL G IMMA KEEP IT 100....

I know its been forever and a day since I last was on here giving yall more of what has been going on. Finally had a chance to get away from the east coast for a little bit so I took advantage of a great opportunity and enjoyed myself in the buckeye state for about a week. Since I was last on here Obama has running mate for the election, gas has gone down almost a quarter, and the entire Olympics has gone by over in China(Men Basketball gold back where it belongs). I'm sure each one of yall have a opinion on all of these topics and more and I would love to talk about it.

On a more somber note a good friend will be leaving this area for a while to take on new ventures in Florida and I want to wish her mush joy and success down there. I hope you have the same type of affect on people down there as you did on me and so many others in the DMV. As soon as I saw this video I knew you had to see it if you hadn't already.

Got another video to share from the wonderful world of youtube. This one is by up and coming singer and producer Ryan Leslie. Now I don't know about yall, but I had no idea the brother was so talented. Now we will wait and see what will become of this guy. But if he blows up like i think he might do remember where you saw this first...lol

Oh yeah my boy also put me on to a video that i thought some of yall might find as humorous as well as pretty nice when it come to concept and flows. Asher Roth goes in on the Roc Boys beat and makes a pretty funny video....

P.S. Pep out the Obama shirts...How trendy is that right now????? I ain't even going there right now tho, I'm going to save that for another post tho....

And That's that......

Oh I loved her so....

On the real g Imma keep it 100..........

over this weekend while trying to change a tire on 495 I found my boy bishop's first two CDs and a weird yet surreal feeling came over me. That very exist that we were at was one of our most frequently used ones to get off at to go push his CDs at wheaton mall. Back when we used to be on a grind seen mostly by street hustlers. I started to think about our Kanye experience and how that lite a fire under bishop that still burns today. The days at VIP and Dream, and occasionally platinum dancing the night away to the hottest songs of the day. Club hopping like lil frogs around 18 and up spots in DC, each time telling ourselves, "one day B's joint is gonna be in here".

Hours spent at the computer downloading and listening to every new track from every rapper everywhere and comparing them to bishop's joints. Getting the aim, text, or phone call at anytime for the latest rating to the newest songs. At times i used to think I was cheating on my girl with music and basketball because that all i seemed to be interested in. These same songs would often turn into the score to our weekly adventures around the DMV. Occasionally our love for this music would have us on trips out of town but we always remembered to let everyone know where we were from.

So as I sit here in Baltimore, 45 mins away from my hometown, I remember the feelings of old that even got me to that point. What I listened to that made me want to be apart of that world and create my mark in it. The songs and artist that shaped my ear for music and for what I thought was hot. Its funny because Baltimore used to be my escape from everything home (it also helped my girl at the time lived here), and now that I'm up here all these great memories are playing in my head like a movie reel that I don't want to stop. Here's one of my poems that expresses those exact feelings.

The Golden Age

My sisters and I would wait with our tapes to record songs off the radio
Do you remember that feeling when tribe first told you about their senerio
And naugthy made all the crowds say hip hop hoary, ho, hey, ho
Even mtv gave us our own video show
When cube was letting everyone know that he had a good day
While crucial conflict was in the middle of the barn smoking on, heyyyyy
I was in dc but a arrested development took me to see mr. wendel in Tennessee
And after school me and my crew wanted to find a girl named iesha at the playground like ABC
I would jump, jump, as I missed the bus with my backward clothes falling
At this time mike, magic, and bird were all still balling
Biggie had me reading word up magazine because of his dream
and who didn't want a starter jacket with the raiders even if they weren't ur favorite team
I couldn't think of what I would do "If I ruled the world"
I did know I wouldn't treat them like brenda's baby girl
Putting batteries in the frig so I could listen to my fugees tape on my walkman
If that aint work I took them from the remote just to hear questlove and his band
all the while arguing with my boys at the court about what bone was really saying
Cuz you know we all mumbled the lines until the chorus started playing
Back then I would wish I was a lil bit taller, wish I was a baller, wish I had a girl who looked good so I could call her
Bobing my head to wu tang as I waited for my carry out food playing the arcade version street fighter
For once it was alright to be a bad boy or for a brother to be on death row
Had me in my mirror with my brush trying to be a mc and create my own flow
You had to have a name with young, lil, or mc in it
Everybody wanted hammer pants and knew the dance to too legit
To set urself apart you had to get ur own type of cut with designs and a part
From cross colors to absolute madness, all of our clothes looked like African art
It wasn't til coolio that I realized that my hood was a gansta paradise
I lived on one of those blocks were the boom boxes blasted while the homies played with two or three dice
We tried to copy the same outfits we saw in the basement on rap city
I remember puff dancing in every video saying take that, take that, b4 all the name changes and became just diddy
I was singing o.p.p. but didn't know what it stood for
This was the era b4 the east coast, west coast war
Dudes of this time thrived on being the best storytella
This was when there was still only one artist on rocafella
I often wondered if we were menace to society because of being boyz in the hood
Now looking back on that time in my life I can say it was all good

and that's that.........

More This and that..........

So this weekend was my first one home since my boy Bishop aka Shayan moved to Fla and it was eventful to say the least. First off I want to say I'm gonna miss Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes. Two legends in their own right lost in one weekend. I grew up on a lot of Hayes because of my father and his sound was one of a kind. I had many car rides around the DMV shotgun with my dad as Isaac was the soundtrack to our adventure.

The Look Of Love - Issac Hayes

SO after a weekend of changing tires and trips from bmore to dc and back again, getting chicken and mambo sauce at 3 in the morning, seeing spartan sandals, and trying to hoop way to early from this surgery, I realized that life these days is what you make it and that at the end of the day everything is everything.

Well we all know by now that Jay-Z is coming out with another cd called "Blueprint 3". He gave us a sneak pep at Kanye's concert in New York.

well the whole song is here now.....

The DMV has another summer joint.....

Dc's own Tabi Bonney has a new video for his new summer single "Cool and Fly" from his upcoming album Dope meets Fresh..... Fresh meets Superstar. The video was shot in his homeland Togo, West Africa. Its nice to see a artist go shoot a video in Africa and show the world how beautiful the continent and people really are. Oh yeah he cut his hair to. I'm sure if it was a good look(No Homo) but we shall see.

The images throughout the video truly make me want to plan a trip to Africa asap. Like my man Jamie Foxx said "nothing but packs of Halle Barry's walking around that joint".
